Lighthouse on Maine Coast Maine enjoys a modern transportation network via air, land and sea. Due to its large and strategic maritime location, Maine is an important transportation center for international markets.

There are 46 commercial airports in Maine, 18 seaplane bases and 1 flight strip. The Portland International Jetport is Maine’s largest airport with seven passenger carriers.

There are over 1,400 miles (2,253 km) of operational track in Maine, serviced by seven rail companies, making rail a viable commercial transportation option. Amtrak provides convenient passenger service.

All major markets in Maine are easily accessed by road. I-95 runs the length of Maine, ending at the Canadian border, and connects southbound to all major eastern cities, including Boston, New York and Washington, DC. Scenic Route 1 runs along the entire coast of Maine.

Maine’s most prominent and distinct transportation features are its seaports. With seven conveniently located, year-round, deepwater ports, Maine provides regular international service to markets as distant as Japan.
